Arabian Sea - Yemen - Follow-ups: The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, called on Wednesday for the adoption of a unified international approach to settling the ongoing conflict in the country, stressing that divisions in international positions hinder opportunities to reach a comprehensive peace. Grundberg's call came in a statement issued after the conclusion of a visit to the Saudi capital, Riyadh, during which he met with the Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, and a number of regional and international officials. The statement explained that the meeting with Al-Alimi focused on "the urgent need to address the deteriorating living conditions of Yemenis, and the need to make progress towards a political agreement that paves the way for a just and sustainable peace." He stressed the importance of the continued regional role in creating favorable conditions for reaching a peaceful settlement. In another meeting with the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the Security Council accredited to Yemen, the UN envoy affirmed that "UN efforts require unified and consistent international support" to advance the political solution track. The statement also noted Grundberg's concern about the continued detention of UN employees, diplomatic missions, and non-governmental organizations by the Houthi group, considering that such practices "undermine confidence and hinder humanitarian and political efforts," reiterating the United Nations' commitment to take diplomatic action to secure their release.
