Arabian Sea - Yemen - Follow-ups: The Indian government, through sources in the Ministry of External Affairs, has denied reports that the death sentence issued against Indian nurse Nimisha Priya in Yemen, who is accused of killing her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in 2017, has been overturned. The office of the Indian Muslim religious scholar, Kanthapuram Abu Bakr Musliyar, had announced that the death sentence against Nimisha Priya, 38, from Kerala, had been overturned after mediation with the Houthi authorities in Sana'a, led by a team of Yemeni scholars and diplomats. The office said that "the death sentence, which had been previously suspended, has been completely overturned after a high-level meeting in Sana'a." But the Indian Ministry of External Affairs told the local ANI agency that "the information being promoted by some individuals regarding the Nimisha Priya case is inaccurate." It confirmed before the Indian Supreme Court earlier this month that "India cannot do much" due to the absence of formal diplomatic relations with Yemen. The case dates back to 2017, when Nimisha was accused of injecting her Yemeni partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, with a narcotic substance in an attempt to retrieve her passport, which he had confiscated, leading to his death. Her death sentence was upheld by the Yemeni Supreme Judicial Council in 2023.
