Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty renewed, on Monday, the emphasis on the importance of reaching a comprehensive solution to the Sudanese crisis, stressing the need to provide a suitable environment for launching a comprehensive political process. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that Abdel-Aty affirmed during a telephone call with the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Mohi El-Din Salem, "the constants of the Egyptian position supporting the unity of Sudan, the integrity of its territory, and the preservation of its national institutions." He also stressed "the importance of coordinating regional and international efforts to support a complete and sustainable ceasefire, and to create the climate for the launch of a comprehensive political path that achieves the aspirations of the Sudanese people for security, stability, and development." In a related context, Abdel-Aty reiterated the need for full commitment to the statement of the International Quartet Committee, which includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the United States, and to push towards establishing a permanent ceasefire, in a way that preserves the unity of the Sudanese state and its institutions. Since the outbreak of the war between the Sudanese army and the "Rapid Support Forces" in April 2023 due to disputes over power during the transitional phase that was supposed to end with general elections, millions of Sudanese have been living in difficult humanitarian conditions, with worsening hunger and epidemics. The "Rapid Support Forces" currently control the entire Darfur region in western Sudan, after tightening their grip, in recent weeks, on the city of El Fasher in North Darfur State after an 18-month siege, while the army controls the eastern part of the country.
